The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced a ban on final year week celebrations and the traditional signing of white shirts during final exams to curb unruly behaviour and maintain discipline on campus.
This announcement, which has sparked widespread reactions among students, also prohibits several other practices typically associated with end-of-year celebrations, including Driving cars on campus, Spraying money, Water rituals, Drinking alcohol, and Gathering at the “Latten” by the main gate.
The university management stated that these measures were necessary to ensure safety, preserve order, and uphold the institution’s standards.
Students previously suspended during the last final exams for engaging in prohibited activities have been assigned a week-long community service on campus.
These students will be required to participate in cleaning and sweeping various areas of the University of Calabar campus.
This community service is a prerequisite for the possibility of lifting their suspensions.
Failure to comply with this directive will have serious consequences.
Affected students who refuse to partake in the compulsory one-week service will not be cleared for graduation, the university management warned.
