Katsina Government Announces Special Classes For WAEC Candidates Amid Backlash Over School Closure For Ramadan.
The Katsina State government has reaffirmed its decision to close schools during Ramadan, while also introducing special classes for students preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement released on Tuesday by the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Public Relations Officer, Sani Danjuma, explained that the decision aims to balance religious observance with academic continuity.
“In response to ongoing discussions about school operations, the ministry has developed a strategy to minimise academic disruption while recognising the challenges posed by Ramadan,” the statement read.
To ensure that final-year secondary school students are adequately prepared for their exams despite the school closures, the state government has arranged extra lessons for Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) candidates in public, private, and community schools.
These classes will commence on March 3, 2025.
Danjuma highlighted that the government considered the extreme weather conditions in northern Nigeria and the difficulties students and teachers face while fasting before making its decision.
“The structured lessons will be scheduled in a way that accommodates both students and teachers observing Ramadan while also considering environmental conditions,” he added.
