John Monash Scholarships

The John Monash scholarship was inspired by General Sir John Monash, and between 14 and 20 scholarships are usually awarded annually. With this scholarship, recipients are empowered to gain expertise from the institution of their choice, after which they have to have a great impact on Australia. The John Monash scholarship is open to only Australian candidates of different age groups interested in either science, technology, the arts, or social impact.

The scholarship comes with an annual stipend of $100,000 AUD, which is for up to three years of study. The funds gotten from this scholarship can be used to cater for tuition, accommodation and other living expenses. The total amount of funding that will be received is based on the length of the chosen program:

$100,000 AUD is what will be received for a One-year master’s degree, $200,000 AUD for a two-year program, and $300,000 AUD for three-year PhD (or DPhil) program. It is important to know that the maximum is three years, and if the chose program is more than 3 years, the student has to self-fund through the rest of the program year.

Another thing to know is that you will be getting a travel allowance to help relieve you of burden of moving from Australia to the country of study. Have it in mind that this fund is a one off fund.

When it comes to choosing a university, there is a plethora of choices you can pick from as long as the university is an accredited one outside of Australia. Also, you have to be able to justify why the university is beneficial to Australia and to your future career.

To get an additional fee waiver and bursaries for this scholarship, you must have completed your studies at any of the partner universities, such as:

King’s College London, England (Get an additional £5,000 bursary)
Cranfield University, England (Full fee waiver for Master’s programs, excluding MBA)
IE University Madrid, Spain (Get an additional 30% waiver)
University of Groningen, Netherlands (Full waiver for PhD programs).

Eligibility and Criteria

Applicants should be Australian citizens
The applicant must have an undergraduate degree from a university in Australia or should be looking to complete the degree by 31 December 2025.
Applicants should be ready to attend an accredited university outside of Australia for a full-time master’s degree or PhD that will commence no earlier than 2026.
Applicants should be ready to take up the admission and start attending classes within 12 months after receiving the scholarship.

Here are the conditions in which an applicant might be found ineligible:

If the funding the applicant wants is for 2025
When an applicant seeks funding for a university in Australia itself
Have a Rhodes, Fulbright or Ramsay scholarship, to cover the same program as that being applied for with John Monash.

The Selection Process

Firstly, applicants need to remember that this scholarship is for 2026 and not 2025. Also, check the minimum requirement to be sure you are eligible. The application for this scholarship has opened, and the information webinars will be held between May and June.

Applications for the John Monash scholarship will close on June 30th, 2025 (5 pm AEST). Late applications will be disregarded.
The initial review of applications will be carried out in late July. Applications will be reviewed to ensure that the applicants are in line with what is required.
If shortlisted, applicants will be called for the first round of interviews in September, which will be held across states and territories.
After the first interview, the shortlisted candidate will again be called upon for a national interview in October. The decision will be made during this interview, which will be held in Melbourne or Sydney.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome by late November. For applicants who did not get the scholarship, after the final selection process is done, you may ask for written feedback.
The two rounds of interviews will be carried out by senior professional and academic leaders from across Australia.
