Canada has announced the end of the pathway that allowed international students to convert their study permits into permanent residency.
The new regulation requires students to return to their home countries after their study visas expire, putting an end to policies that previously enabled such transitions.
Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, confirmed this development during a recent interview, outlining the government’s commitment to streamlining immigration policies while addressing ongoing challenges.
What This Means for International Students
Under the new policy, International students will no longer be able to use study permits as a stepping stone to permanent residency in Canada.
Students must leave Canada upon the expiration of their study permits, aligning with the original terms of their visas.
The popular program that expedited study permit processing for eligible students from 14 countries will be discontinued.”
The decision follows growing concerns about immigration system strain and recent protests by international students demanding smoother transitions to permanent residency.
Minister Miller clarified that study permits were never intended to guarantee permanent residency.
“When people come here and decide they want to be students, there are no guarantees to become permanent residents,” he stated.
